SAFETY SURFACING - BARK
Play Bark has traditionally been the material of choice although its use has largely been superseded by the less maintenance intensive alternatives. However, within a woodland setting it is aesthetically pretty much unbeatable. Play bark is specially formulated and tumbled to give a soft, rounded material that will be particularly appreciated by small hands and feet and is considered environmentally friendly since over time it will naturally compact and degrade.
As a safety surface, the depth of bark required will be determined by the critical fall height of the play equipment. The bark is laid over a weed-suppressing membrane and can be contained either within timber edging, a fenced area or excavated into the ground.
This material will require a fair bit of maintenance; it should be remembered that not only will it naturally migrate but that children can be relied upon to assist migration, the area will need regular raking to return the bark to the dips and hollows that will form around and beneath well used areas (ladders and swings for example), it will also need topping up at least annually and finally the local wildlife can and will regard it as their bathroom.
